Steven Horsford backs Kendrick Meek Jr. in CD 24 race, joins local effort on TPS

A Congressional Black Caucus leader is adding his national profile — and Caribbean advocacy — to Democrat Kendrick Meek Jr.'s campaign for Florida's 24th Congressional District.

U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford of Nevada, Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Black Caucus, is endorsing Meek for CD 24.

He's also joining Meek in the district Thursday to discuss efforts to extend temporary protected status (TPS), following the Supreme Court's decision last week allowing President Donald Trump to end the designation.

The two will participate in a roundtable with local Haitian leaders and community advocates at the Piman Bouk Restaurant in Miami at 12:30 p.m., with a press availability following at 1:30 p.m.

Like U.S. Reps. Jim Clyburn and Bill Nelson, who endorsed Meek late last month, Horsford lauded Meek's family history of public service, calling it an “unmatched, generational passion.”

Following in the footsteps of his grandmother, Carrie Meek, and father, Kendrick Meek Sr., Meek, Horsford said, is “ready to serve on Day One.”

“Whether defending fundamental rights or creating pathways to true economic mobility, Kendrick does not back down from tough fights,” he said.

“He has the experience, the heartbeat of his community, and a track record of action that South Florida needs right now.”

A member of the House Democratic leadership serving on the influential Ways and Means Committee, Horsford represents Nevada's 4th Congressional District and is the first African American from the state to serve in Congress.

Both Horsford and Meek are of Caribbean descent, a press release from Meek's campaign noted.

Meek said he is “deeply proud” to have support from Horsford, who he said has “dedicated his own career to fostering economic opportunity, protecting workers, and lowering everyday costs for families.”

“His relentless focus on delivering high-paying jobs and community-driven results is exactly the kind of principled leadership I look forward to partnering with in Washington,” he added.

A University of Miami-trained lawyer who filed for the race in early June, Meek has worked as a House Judiciary Committee intern, a legal assistant with the Human Rights Campaign and served at the federal Office of Management and Budget. He now practices land use, zoning, and real estate development law as an associate at LSN Law.

Meek is one of seven Democrats running in CD 24, which covers Miami Gardens in Miami-Dade and Hollywood, Miramar, and Pembroke Park in Broward County. More than 68.7% of voters there backed Kamala Harris in 2024, making the Democratic Primary the race that will effectively determine who succeeds retiring U.S. Rep. Frederica Wilson. The Primary is Aug. 18, followed by the General Election on Nov. 3.
